"I don't have anything but positive feedback for my experience with the course and my work done at King's [Job Placement]. I thought the TEFL Training was excellent. And I think the way King's has taken us in, trained us, and provided superb life support has been brilliant. Thank you very much"

Barcelona TEFL Course Information

Training Center

Training takes place at our partner school, which is located in the heart of the city on Avenida Diagonal, one of the city's main streets, just 55 yards (50 m) from Jean Nouvel's Agbar Tower. The hotel is easily accessible via the Ronda de Dalt and Ronda Litoral.

The 4-Week TEFL Course

Our 4-week TEFL course is fully accredited and certified to meet international standards. The training involves up to 6 hours of observed teaching practice and 120 hours of classroom instruction. You will acquire the practical skills to teach English as a foreign language in any country around the world.

Classes run Monday to Friday, 9-4pm. Weekends are free to explore the local area but you will have homework assignments.

Accommodation

Accommodations are ideally located to allow you the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Spanish breakfast from one of the many restaurants or to stroll through the gorgeous tree lined walkways. We will make sure that your stay throughout the duration of the TEFL course in Barcelona is comfortable and relaxing.

Getting Here and Visas

Airport pickup and transfer is included in the Advanced package. We recommend you arrive in Barcelona at least 2 days prior to the course start date.

Anyone who works on a tourist visa will have to renew it every three months by leaving the country. Technically, anyone who spends more than 183 days a year in Spain is considered a resident and is liable to pay Spanish tax, though Spain has a double taxation treaty with the UK.

Prospects for Teachers

Many employers do much of their recruitment locally and at the last minute. A very high percentage of schools depend on word of mouth and ‘walk ins’ for their staff requirements or advertise heavily in the local press. Anyone with some experience and/or a qualification should find it fairly easy to find a job this way. Many independent language schools are run by expatriate Britons, and some of these actually offer some guidance and opportunity for further professional development for new teachers.

Spanish students sign up for English classes during September and into early October. Consequently the academies do not know how many classes they will offer and how many teachers they will need until quite late.

Conditions of Work

The minimum salary is around €1,000 Euros, after deductions, for 25 hours of teaching per week. A standard hourly wage would be 15 Euros. The very best paid hourly wages of around 20+ Euros, are paid by centers specialising in sending teachers out to firms or those teaching short courses funded by the EU.

Fixing up a Job

Most teaching jobs in Spain are found on the spot and the best time to look is between the end of summer holidays and the start of the school term which falls in the first two weeks of October, although you can find work late in October also. Since a fair number of teachers do not return to their jobs after Christmas break and schools are often left in the lurch, early January is also a possibility.

Many schools close over the summer, but some remain open, and since most of their teachers disappear over summer there is work available along with English summer camps around the country.

Barcelona - Capital of Catalonia

Introduction

As the capital of Catalonia, Spain, Barcelona is nearly unmatched in the diversity of its attractions and sites. Boasting 7 beaches, one of which was voted the best urban beach in the world by the National Geographic and Discovery Channel, and a mild Mediterranean climate, Barcelona is a haven for those seeking relaxation.

Equally captivating though, is the variety of architectural marvels that this ancient city has to offer. Highlights include the medieval Gothic Quarter, the surreal and Dali-esque Casa Batlló, and the intricate and ornate Sagrada Família, which is the international symbol of Barcelona. Barcelona has the perfect mix of Mediterranean tranquillity and a rich culture that is steeped in history.

Testimonials

"As I began my search for an English program in Asia, I stumbled across a variety of courses. You struck me as the most compelling program for several reasons. First, the program's flexibility is attractive. You offer a variety of certification locations to obtain the TEFL/TESOL, along with various teaching locations upon completion of the program. Secondly, a job guarantee provides me with a sense of security. I can feel comfortable traveling to a new country and not worry about searching for work. Lastly, everyone I contacted who completed the program had nothing but great things to say about it. I was assured to hear that everything from the program organizers, down to the accommodations throughout the certification process and the actual TESOL training was as advertised."
